TLT is working with BeWell to deliver Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for church volunteers and clergy who are working with vulnerable people.

We have received further funding through the Benefact Trust and Awards for All to provide FREE Mental Health First Aidtraining - the normal cost being £390 per person. The course is available to clergy, staff and volunteers who work on church-based social action projects across the Diocese of Chester. The training is Mental Health First Aid England accredited. It gives first aiders the knowledge to be able to spot the subtle signs of mental health issues, and to have the confidence and skills to intervene in the early stages to promote quicker recovery and prevent someone experiencing a mental health crisis. This may ultimately prevent suicide too. We are working with Be Well to deliver the training both face to face and online, with capacity for up to 16 participants on each course.

When delivered face to face, the course is carried out over two-full day sessions. Hard copies of the materials will be provided at the start of the first session. The online course is delivered over 4-half day sessions, which are delivered through the MHFA England Online Learning Hub and materials are posted directly to the learner.

As an MHFAider® you will be able to:

• Recognise those that may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention
• Encourage a person to identify and access sources of professional help and other supports
• Practise active listening and empathy
• Have a conversation with improved mental health literacy around language and stigma
• Discuss the MHFAider® role in depth, including boundaries and confidentiality
• Practise self-care
• Know how to use the MHFAider Support App®
• Know how to access a dedicated text service provided by Shout and ongoing learning opportunities with MHFA England

Everyone who completes the course gets:

• A hard copy workbook to support their learning throughout the course
• A digital manual to refer to whenever they need it after completing the course
• A wallet-sized reference card with the Mental Health First Aid action plan
• A digital MHFAider® certificate

Here's what some participants who have completed the training have said about the course and its leaders:.

  • The course was amazing and so was Nikki so supportive and encouraging... The course was laid out in a manner that was understandable and manageable and you felt supported and appreciated. Just amazing and feel better equipped to what I may face in ministry.
  • This was an informative, engaging and well presented course - I am grateful for the opportunity to participate and feel more confident with regard to supporting someone with mental health issues now than I did before engaging with the course.
  • The course was pitched at the right level for me as I had very little practical knowledge and awareness of mental health. It helped to highlight some personal prejudices and misconceptions. I hope to be less judgemental and much more able to listen as a result of this course.
  • Our Instructor was knowledgable and empathetic and esponded sensitively to individual members needs and
    responses.
  • This has been a challenging course: it challenged my preconceptions, it challenged me emotionally, it challenged me to go out and use the ALGEE tool (which I have done!) It has been a very supportive course - Nikki has been really encouraging throughout, listening well and offering lots of locally and contextually relevant signposts for us to use.
